David Cook works in crime analysis for the Greensboro, North Carolina, Police Department. Wilpen Gorr is Professor of Public Policy and Management at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. George Tita is Associate Policy Analyst for the Criminal Justice Program at The RAND Corporation and is a member of the National Consortium on Violence Research. SPATIAL ANALYSES OF CRIME CRIMINAL JUSTICE 2000 crime, either because of the people who or facilities that are located there, then interventions designed to alter those persons and activities might well affect crime. Alternatively, if the spatial distribution of crime is essentially random, then targeting specific places is not likely to be an effective crime control strategy. Sorting out the place/crime relationship requires analytical methods that are best suited to isolating the impacts of place on crime.
